Welcome

“Woodcraft and wood-turning in particular gives me immense pleasure, but what gives me even greater pleasure is the the smiling faces and looks of happiness and appreciation that it creates in others”  – Richard Colson

About Richard Colson

I have been interested in woodwork all my life but only got into it seriously about 20 years ago. About 10 years ago I attended a wood-turning course in UK with Mick Hanbury (see:- www.mickhanbury.com), hosted by Craft Supplies, alas a company that no longer exists.

I acquired the woodturning tools and equipment necessary. Mick’s work has been an inspiration to me ever since.

I started out as a hobby wood turner but soon discovered that my family and relatives only needed so many wooden bowls!

So it was a question of what to do with my wooden creations.

About Richard

At  the time I completed the wood-turning course, all those years ago, I had sold a previous business. This gave me the opportunity to take up wood-turning full time and I began to sell my creations at farmers markets.

To begin with I concentrated on creating utility items for the everyday home and kitchen. Over time, I have built up the range of wooden products that I offer.

Turned Wooden Products

  • Salad bowls
  • Wooden plates and dishes
  • Ornamental plates and dishes
  • Egg cups
  • Key ring knobs
  • Ladies vanity mirrors
  • Trinket boxes
  • Candle holders with beeswax candles
  • Jewellery dishes
  • Wine bottle stoppers.

Non-turned Wooden Products

  • Chopping boards
  • Coasters
  • Toast tongs – get that hot toast out of the toaster without burning your fingers
  • Book & picture stands.
  • Egg holders – You do not need to keep you eggs in the refridgerator.
  • Rustic wisdom signs
  • Aromathery bottle boxes,  to organize those little bottles for aromatherapy that seem to be lying all over the house.
  • Wooden games
  • Children’s playing blocks
  • Wooden buttons

Ornamental and Artistic Wooden Products

More recently I have begun to make more artistic and ornamental items such as perforated bowls and dishes, some with inlaid colour finishes. Again this is thanks to inspiration  I got from Mick Hanbury.

Farmers  Markets –  Roundstone

I exibit at Roundstone Farmers Market every Sunday in the summer period from the start of June to the end of August. I have also had orders for serving boards for restaurants and various other private commissions. Some of my items may be seen in Andrea Rossi’s Art Studio in the Spiddal Craft Centre.

Affordable Hand Made & Turned Wooden Products

My philosophy has been to keep costs as low as possible so as to cater for all pockets. As my market is primarily with tourists who are visiting Ireland in the summer and often do not have space or cash for large items I make a number of small things that visitors can take away as a momento of their visit.  Having said that, I also some get business from Irish residents for their own use or as gifts for family, friends or weddings.
